Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince

Prince Selius (introduced in Nine Parchments) had aptitude for magic, but misused his father's spellbook, releasing the shadow of his soul and destroying his family's castle. His parents therefore sent him away to the Astral Academy, but the Academy wizards were unable to control the prince's nightmare magic and he eventually escapes. Amadeus the wizard, Pontius the knight and Zoya the thief are tasked by the Academy headmaster to bring Selius back. At first the trio tries to convince him to return, but Selius refuses, revealing that the Academy simply locked him in the dungeons. His unstable shadow magic causes his own nightmares, those of the heroes, and even the inhabitants of the wilderness to manifest physically, and Selius flees.

TRINE 4: THE NIGHTMARE PRINCE begins with the trio of heroes Zoya the Thief, Amadeus the Wizard, and Pontius the Knight, who have all gone their separate ways. They do their own adventures until they're yet again called into service for the greater good of the kingdom. It seems that young Prince Selius, determined to learn spellcraft, has unfortunately tapped into forces well beyond his control. Since that moment, the prince has been plagued by dreams of dark creatures and the destruction of the kingdom. Now, these shadows from his nightmares have somehow managed to cross from the veil of dreaming into the real world. Making matters worse still, the prince has suddenly and inexplicably disappeared. This leads to our trio of heroes being called back to action one more time, tasked with recovering the missing prince and finding a way to drive back the darkness trapped within the prince's soul. It won't be an easy task, but together there's nothing these three friends can't accomplish.

"Teamwork makes the dream work." That's the best way to sum up Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince, with your trio of intrepid adventurers working to defeat literal nightmares. And with its fluid controls, colorful visuals, and stellar sounds, Trine 4 is a dream to play as well. The game seamlessly blends classic platforming with wonderful puzzle elements that force players to think beyond basic button mashing or hack-and-slash action. That's not to say Trine 4 doesn't have its share of action, including some tough boss battles. Those moments of action are great, but it's utilizing the full range of your team's abilities and coming up with creative ways to overcome obstacles that feels most rewarding. Every victory is one you feel you earned.

The levels are also broken up with combat sections, where manifestations of nightmares will appear, like wolves or spiders, and you'll need to quickly take them out. These are incredibly easy to do, especially in co-op. You won't find a challenge in this regard, but it again serves to mix up the gameplay.

If you asked me to recount the story, I probably couldn't tell you much other than "a prince has bad dreams and three people are sent to rescue him while getting caught in the nightmares as they spread throughout the kingdom." That's reductive, of course, but it's honestly the gist of it and about all you'll need to know about the narrative.

Here's the setup. Amadeus, Zoya, and Pontius are all off doing their own things, which is exactly how every Trine game starts. Before long, they're interrupted in their respective activities by a request from the Astral Academy. Seems that Prince Selius has been having some pretty nasty nightmares, some of which have been manifesting themselves in the real world. Naturally, this isn't a desirable state of affairs. It's up to Amadeus and his buddies to save the day once again.

It says a lot for the quality of Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince that I was prepared to overlook the bad combat, clunky controls, and lack of innovation. It's comforting to spend another few hours with Amadeus, Zoya, and Pontius, and the puzzles Trine 4 offers up are some of the best its series has ever seen. You won't come away from Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince ready to sing its praises from the highest rooftops, but it is that most elusive of things: a very good game, plain and simple. That's all it needs to be. It's not "trine" to be anything else. Sorry.

The games are about three heroes: a knight, who is so fat that his armor almost does not fit, a not so wise wizard and a thief, who secretly has a heart of gold. Together they traverse a beautiful fantasy world, solving puzzles using their own unique abilities and having conversations along the way. While the three are on their mission, in the fourth game, to return a confused prince back to where he belongs, you can hear the most gorgeous music.
